A Private Audience

I created this series of small works on paper during the COVID-19 pandemic, while in isolation in my studio in Northern Ireland. Each painting is an intimate and private observation of the female form. I examine interactions between figures and their environment: classical and contemporary poses combine with reflections and juxtapositions with objects within an interior setting.

In my usual ‘fusionist’ style, these paintings are a mix of East and West; of Orientalism and principles of Western modernism. Particularly inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, the contemporary works of Anita Klein, and the bold curves of Henri Matisse, I have used a muted colour palette to show the beauty, power and simplicity of the female nude.
